Vocabulary Report

Unit 1
Demanding

Definition: making difficult demands on one’s resource, patience, energy
Sentence: The work is physically demanding.


Interpretation
Definition: one’s own understanding of the meaning of something
Sentence: Her evidence suggests a different interpretation of the events.


Motivation

Definition: incentive, drive, or stimulus to accomplish something
Sentence: What is the motivation behind this meeting?


Unit 3
Compromise



Definition: settlement of differences in which each side makes concessions
Sentence: In any relationship, you have to make compromise.

Permissive

Definition: tolerant of behavior or practices disapproved of by others; lenient
Sentence: He is a bad student, because he has permissive parents.


Privacy

Definition: freedom from unauthorized intrusion
Sentence: The stars were longing for some peace and privacy.


Unit 4

Confusing

Definition: puzzling, bewildering, perplexing
Sentence: The instructions on the box are very confusing.


Flexible

Definition: characterized by a capability to adapt to new, different, or changing requirements
Sentence: Our plans need to be flexible enough to cater for the needs of everyone.


Vary

Definition: to be different or diverse; to differ
Sentence: The students’ work varies considerably in quality.


Unit 9

Bibliography

Definition: a list of the books and articles used or referred to by an author
Sentence: There is a useful bibliography at the end of each chapter.


Probation

Definition: the status of a person being tested or on trial because of misconduct
Sentence: The prisoner was put on probation.





Citations

Definition: references to author, title, source, date, and page of quotations; passages cited or quoted by an author
Sentence: Space does not permit the citation of the examples.


Unit 12

Stereotype

Definition: standardized, oversimplified mental picture of a person or a group
Sentence: He does not conform to the usual stereotype of the businessman with a dark.

Alienation

Definition: isolation and withdrawal from the values of the society
Sentence: The new policy resulted in the alienation of many voters.

Thrilled

Definition: extremely excited and happy
Sentence: He was thrilled at the prospect of seeing them again.
